When you've found a Mentor you are interested in connected with, you'll want to send a personalized and professional message to begin the conversation. Here are a few suggestions on how to craft a professional and polished opening message to begin the conversation:
- Mention what drew you to the Mentor's profile so they understand why you reached out.
- Say a bit about who you are: share your interests, what you’re studying at Florida State University, and what type of career paths you're interested in.
- Briefly indicate what you’d like to connect about: their career background, building your network, questions about pursuing graduate school, or asking a question about how to build a skill they already have.
- Suggest a few ways to continue the conversation: an email reply, a phone call, a Skype meeting, or an in-person meeting.
- From there, choose "Contact" or "Request as Mentor". Either way, the Mentor will be notified via email, making it easy for them to reply.
- Please act responsibly and professionally by being respectful of others’ time. Remember to uphold the Garnet and Gold, and that you represent Florida State University when you reach out. Professional courtesy, “please” and “thank you” go a long way!
